More parking coming for Avondale

To support Avondale’s upcoming library, community hub and upgraded town square, we’re starting work on a new car park for 28 Racecourse Parade at the end of this month.

Last year, we worked with the Avondale community to get their thoughts on the proposed designs for the library, community hub and upgraded town square, the construction of which is expected to start in 2023. Feedback was positive, with locals’ needs and desires incorporated in the design. We also identified a need for more car parking, which we’re now making a reality.

Mahi will begin on the new car park at the end of this month. The space will be gated, with two mobility parks and 28 general parking spaces on what is currently unused council land next to the Avondale Central Reserve at 28 Racecourse Parade.

The car park’s construction is expected to begin at the end of May and be completed by September 2022. To minimise disruption to the community, our contractors will be working on weekdays during business hours.

The new library, community hub and upgraded town square (Hub) will be a place for the whole whānau, ideal for exploring the library, sitting with a book in one of the quiet areas and enjoying the good views, or using the outdoor space for activities like games and barbecues. The input from community groups, individuals and local organisations were all essential to the concept design process for the Hub.

Project updates

  1. Works scheduled for Saturday 13 August: Our contractors will be working this Saturday 13 Aug, 9am to 3pm to continue keeping the project on track for a September completion.

  2. Works scheduled for Sat 30 July: Our contractors will be working this Saturday 30 July, 9am to 3pm. The works include prepping the subbase and getting the steel and formworks in place for creating retaining walls.

  3. Works scheduled for Sat 23 July: With the continued wet weather events, our contractors will be working this Saturday 23 July, 9am to 3pm. These works include backfilling and compacting of the subbase (this is the layer of aggregate that needs to be laid before the ground slab/concrete is poured), and preparation work on kerb lines prior to concrete pouring next week

  4. Works scheduled for Sat 9 July: Given recent weather events, our contractors will be working this Saturday 2 July, 9am to 3pm.
  5. Works scheduled for Sat 2 July: Given recent weather events, our contractors will be working this Saturday 2 July, 9am to 3pm. These works include drainage upgrade and pavement construction within the site and not on Racecourse Parade. This will enable JFC to maintain their schedule with an aim for completion by September 2022.
  6. Progress update at 23 June: Drainage works to the area next to the Learn to Ride are approx. 80% complete. Silt fencing will remain in place to control sediment and erosion until grass has regrown. Learn to ride will be open during this time. Drainage upgrade works within the carpark area are continuing and are aiming to be completed within 2 weeks (weather dependant).
  7. Works scheduled for Sat 18 June: Given recent weather events, our contractors will be working this Saturday 18 June, 9am to 3pm. These works will enable JFC to maintain their schedule with an aim for completion by September 2022.
  8. Learn to ride course at Avondale Central Reserve – temporarily unavailable from 30 May: Eke Panuku are undertaking some drainage works on Avondale Central Reserve. This will involve our contractors installing a temporary fence around the Learn to Ride course from Mon 30 May. We’re improving the drainage within the grassed area around the course to better manage flooding events. The Learn to Ride hard surface will not be dug up or removed. The works will take one week (weather dependent).
  9. Construction work started 23 May 2022: Temporary fencing and construction setup underway.
  10. Scheduling correction for construction: While works are primarily planned for Monday-Friday, bad weather might see some work rescheduled to limited hours on a Saturday. If works are required on a future Saturday, we'll give residents three days notice, and it will kept to 9am-3pm.
