Take a walk in Onehunga, visit creative spaces, see performances and exhibitions, kōrero with local artists, and grab yourself some kai and art along the way.
Founded by the local community creative spaces Wheke Fortress, LAKA and The Factory Theatre, Art Walks Onehunga are a regular series of hikoi that allow people to see the neighbourhood in technicolour.
Art Walks Onehunga is a friendly, grass roots gallery-crawl in one of the busiest urban neighbourhoods in Tāmaki Makaurau – Auckland.
The Art Walks allow you to take in a variety of creative spaces, with performances and exhibitions on offer for you to drop-in and enjoy as part of a single event. The kaupapa is to showcase the wide selection of creative talent and hidden gems happening in your backyard, while bringing artists, people, and local businesses closer together.
Wheke Fortress
Wheke Fortress is a creative home for queer Māori and Pacific Islander artists and community organizers. Wheke is the homebase for boutique animation studio, Studio Ki’I Pili, Coconut Clouds recording studio, production house Kuini Qontrol, and regularly exhibits local artists in the gallery space. It is a kaupapa-led and informed space that uplifts the voices, sounds, and visual creations of Indigenous Pacific artists, creatives, and thinkers.
Laka
LAKA is a house for artists, growers, makers and practitioners, to celebrate our relationship with Earth.
“Here we make, we learn, we care for, we collect and we share – koloa, mesina, taonga, treasure = from Aotearoa and Te Moana Nui a Kiwa.”
The Factory Theatre
The Factory Theatre is Onehunga's newest black box performance space - facilitated by He Waka Eke Noa Charitable Trust, they are committed to removing barriers to access arts spaces and events.
The Factory Theatre can support all manner of artistic endeavours from drama, dance, circus (including aerial works), comedy, improv and much more.
