Waiwharariki: The roots of Takapuna

Waiwharariki: The roots of Takapuna

Takapuna will soon have a new town square: Waiwharariki Anzac. Located in Takapuna Central on part of the Anzac Street car park, next to Potters Park and Lake Road, this new public space will provide a welcoming place for the community to relax and spend time in, with space for a market and events. But what is the meaning behind ‘Waiwharariki’?

In this video Harley Wade from Ngāti Pāoa Iwi Trust and Kate Cumberpatch, our priority location director for the north of Tāmaki Makaurau, discuss the name, what it means for Takapuna, and why the use of Māori place names is something to be embraced:

Construction of Waiwharariki Anzac Square has begun and is due to open to the public in mid-2023. For more information on our mahi in Takapuna, visit https://www.ekepanuku.co.nz/takapuna/waiwharariki-anzac-square
