We designed the waterfront with all people in mind – big and small, fishermen and apartment dwellers, old and young, and everyone in between.

But, if there is a most important in that list, then it’s the young.

Our future grown-ups – these are the people who we are ultimately making such spaces for. So the things that matter to them, make sense to them, are the right size, shape and amount of play for them, are vital.

From kicking a ball around Amey Daldy Park, to the excitement of the Fish Market, to scootering and seesaws at Hobson Wharf Pocket Park and paddling in the Karanga Plaza Harbour Pool – they all get the tick of approval, from our tamariki.

If you design (and build, and deliver, and manage) well for children, you are designing well for everyone. Our streets become safer, our public spaces become more usable and everything gets saturated with play. And play is good for all of us.

As a famous quote goes, “We do not inherit the Earth from our ancestors—we borrow it from our children.” So making places for them makes sense, don’t you think?
