Expanded ferry service trial

Following a successful ferry trial in May 2024, Eke Panuku is thrilled to announce a second trial aimed at assessing the viability of operating ferry services during early morning and late evening hours. This trial is designed to help make it easier for commuters to access the Wynyard Quarter and for delegates attending conferences at the Viaduct Events Centre.

This new trial expands on our previous efforts to test new timeframes.

Trial dates and times:

  • Tuesday, 23 July: 6:00am to 10:00pm
  • Wednesday, 24 July: 6:00am to 10:00pm
  • Thursday, 25 July: 6:00am to 10:00pm

Cost: Free – no booking required.

Please note, we are unable to accommodate bicycles or micro-mobility scooters onboard.

We are committed to ensuring that as many people as possible are aware that Wynyard Quarter remains open and easily accessible. While we acknowledge that the alternatives may not be as convenient as the Wynyard Crossing Bridge for those seeking a direct walk, they offer good options for visitors and commuters alike.

For detailed information on available options, including driving, taking the bus, or walking to the area, please visit the Wynyard Quarter website.

We are also exploring other temporary transport solutions and are actively considering the proposals presented to us. Thank you for your continued support and understanding as we work to maintain easy access to Wynyard Quarter during this period.

Background and initial trials

In response to the maintenance currently underway on the Wynyard Crossing Bridge, Eke Panuku held five trials of a free temporary small ferry service across Viaduct Harbour over three weekends in May 2024.  The purpose was to offer an additional means of getting from Te Wero Island to Wynyard Quarter while the bridge is unavailable.

The trials ran on Saturday 11 May, Sunday 12 May, Saturday 18 May, Saturday 25 May and Sunday 26 May. These trials have allowed us to test a range of practical elements, including health and safety, public uptake, and operational logistics.

For the safety of those boarding and disembarking, the trial operated during daylight hours only, between 8am and 5.30pm.  The ferries are fully accessible, but no bikes or scooters were permitted onboard.  The ferries departed on average every 15 minutes, and the trip across Viaduct Harbour took around 5 minutes.

All passengers were given a link to fill out an online survey and ambassadors on site also gathered feedback from passengers.

While feedback is being assessed and considerations are underway about the future of the ferry service, the City Link bus service remains a fast and frequent way to reach Wynyard Quarter while the bridge is under maintenance, operating every seven minutes, 6am - midnight, every day.
