How do you make student engagement meaningful?
By making it interactive, rewarding and fun!
At Auckland University of Technology (AUT) and Manukau Institute of Technology (MIT) orientation week, we partnered with Auckland Transport (AT) to hear directly from students about proposed cycling and walking improvements in Manukau.
We're working with AT to unlock investment and benefits for a growing Manukau through smart infrastructure upgrades like AT's Manukau Cycling Programme. These projects are an important part of ensuring our Manukau urban regeneration programme continues to deliver benefits for local communities while attracting investment in new homes, shops and offices.
In addition to traditional surveys, we brought the energy of a game show to campus—complete with a spinning prize wheel, music, and a heap of awesome giveaways from AT.
Students answered quick questions about the project, spun the wheel, and walked away with prizes—and most importantly, a sense of excitement and ownership in shaping their city. We received valuable feedback that will improve the project.
* Over 200 students engaged
* Great kōrero about active transport
* A genuine value exchange
This activation showed that with creativity, collaboration, and a small budget, we can spark meaningful conversations and amplify community voices in city-shaping projects.
