Hayman Park Playground in Manukau and Northcote's Regeneration Masterplan clean up at Architecture Awards.

Hayman Park Playground in Manukau swept up at two Awards last week, winning an Auckland Planning and Urban Design Award for its stunning Playtower and Kiosk in the Te Kāhui Whaihanga New Zealand Institute of Architects as well as Excellence in the Play Spaces category in the 2024 Resene New Zealand Institute of Landscape Architects (NZILA) Awards.

"It was time for us to go big and bold and put significant investment into a play space that will ensure Manukau is ready to welcome the people and families that will call this area home over the next 10 – 20 years."

Here’s what the NZILA judges had to say:

The joint venture company Wraight + Associates and Athfield Architects went above and beyond to create an impressive super-play structure destination at Hayman Park Playground. The team worked alongside Eke Panuku and Auckland Council, as well as a notable list of external collaborators including CPTED experts, creatives, artists, arborists, and play and pump track specialists, to provide a robust and well considered playground design.

The spatial layout provides a site sensitive response, which speaks to connections at a wider scale; being the natural parkland area, future urban and transport links, and the existing environment; including the retention of existing mature trees and park environments. The judges were delighted to see a playground that demonstrates such a positive community adoption.

Richard Davison continues, "The Hayman Park playground is just part of a significant regeneration programme to create a better urban environment and attract further investment in homes and amenities, and we’re thrilled it has been recognised in this way.”

Northcote Regeneration Masterplan has also been awarded Excellence in the Master Planning and Urban Design strategy category at the 2024 Resene NZ Institute of Landscape Architects Awards.

“This is great recognition for the Northcote Regeneration Master Plan and the collaborative work done to date. A lot of mahi happens before we even think about breaking ground in a neighbourhood to ensure our urban planning is innovative, the community feels part of the journey and the end result captures the spirit of the people who live, work and spend time here.”

The NZILA judges said:

The Northcote Regeneration Plan was developed by Isthmus, Kāinga Ora, and Eke Panuku in partnership, with Auckland Council, Ngā Mana Whenua o Tāmaki Makaurau, and LEAD Alliance over the past eight years. It is a transformational example of urban renewal at scale, and demonstrates the significance of spatial structuring, connectivity, creating character neighbourhoods, celebrating cultural diversity, and integrating water and landscape in design outcomes.

The greening of urban spaces is commended and the integration of the open space network alongside blue and green infrastructure, ensures better future resilience is supported as the community continues to grow and evolve.

Northcote will be a place more and more people want to move to. The plans for Northcote emphasise the importance of development that strengthens community, respects Māorihītori (Māori history) and reinforces local character. See more about Northcote's regeneration here
