The initial phase of this work has focused on the potential vision alongside the opportunities and constraints of this site on the water-edge of the City Centre. A key part of this has been working with Ports of Auckland Limited (POAL) representatives to understand the current redevelopment and quality of the existing port and wharf land and the future of cruise.
The study has reviewed historical work to investigate how the existing quality of the asset could affect future uses for the port land. This will outline what infrastructure, transport, or remedial work will be required to change how the port land is used in the future with climate change factors a crucial consideration.
This includes a number of considerations including delivering a world-class waterfront mixed use development with high quality public places, residential and non-residential development, and potentially an arts, culture or entertainment destination attraction.
Last month Eke Panuku attended a confidential workshop with the Governing Body to outline our investigations to date, alongside additional reporting by external parties requested by the Mayor.
Ongoing Council feedback will inform a confidential decision paper for the Governing Body.
It will be up to the Governing Body to decide the direction of this work and what elements it will ask Eke Panuku to focus on through to December this year.
If directed to, Eke Panuku will work toward providing a draft framework plan based on the Council’s guidance.
It’s important to note that Eke Panuku has no part to play in the decisions around the future redevelopment of Ports of Auckland Limited (POAL) land, our role has specifically been to respond to the opportunity of regenerating a major waterfront asset in Tāmaki Makaurau.
